FLUT (2021)
A dance project for the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven
Here you find the mini-docu FLUT – behind the scenes by Julia Franken
On the occasion of Beethoven’s anniversary, Cologne Opera, the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Cecilia Castagneto, choreographer Emanuele Soavi with his ensemble and the electronic composers Wolfgang Voigt and Stefan Bohne are continuing their unusual artistic collaboration with the project FLUT and, starting with the 7th Symphony and continuing with the String Quartet No. 8 and ending with an electronic new composition, are creating a scenic field of tension of contrasts between collective and individuality, instinct and functionality, utopia and reality.
FLUT is conceived as a triptych and juxtaposes two key works by Beethoven with a new work that takes up fragments of both works and transforms them into electronic sounds and sound tracks. In three scenically and aesthetically very different parts, inspired by Beethoven’s personality and path of life, Emanuele Soavi creates a universe of the I, which raises existential questions, has to confront the fear of the unknown and has to reposition itself again and again: The I as a social and societal being, as a unique creative individual and as the bearer of undreamt-of inner worlds.
Beethoven’s untiring drive for artistic renewal and his dissecting, even visionary view of the social and political movements of his epoch lend his work an inexhaustible energy, like a continuous flood – a flood of the most diverse emotional and intellectual states and changes that is transmitted to the listener, influencing him and his experience, just as the flood in nature changes the shape of the landscape and the conditions of life. This idea of constant change, of the juxtaposition of opposites essentially determines the artistic realisation on stage. Both the stage itself, the personnel that populate it and the quality of their movement will take on new shape, size and form in each of the individual parts, thus creating contemporary images for the multifaceted I in a modern society that is in a state of upheaval and change.
